Polestar has unveiled its own smartphone, stepping beyond traditional Android Auto and CarPlay integrations, first teased during the Guangzhou Auto Show late last year. Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath hinted at a vision for seamless integration between vehicle and smartphone, as reported by CNBC.
Recently, images of the Polestar smartphone emerged on the Chinese website Weibo, suggesting an imminent domestic launch slated for the end of April. While specific specifications are scant, it’s known that the phone is a collaborative effort with Meizu, under Geely’s umbrella, which owns both Polestar and Volvo.
A leaked unboxing video on YouTube showcases the phone’s design featuring four rear cameras and a slim bezel encircling a 6.5-inch screen, speculated to sport a unique 21:9 aspect ratio.
More than merely a device branded by an automaker, the Polestar phone will operate on Xingji Meizu’s FlyMe OS, which is also integrated into Polestar’s vehicles sold in China, like the recent Polestar 4. This integration is particularly significant in China where neither Android Auto nor Apple CarPlay are available, prompting automakers to develop bespoke infotainment systems.
Thomas Ingenlath emphasized the importance of offering exceptional software solutions in the Chinese market, according to CNBC. Meizu’s Flyme Auto, reviewed by Auto Evolution, was praised for its ability to synchronize mobile and automotive platforms in ways that Apple and Android currently do not.
The Polestar smartphone allows users to customize interfaces, run multiple apps in different windows, and make video calls using the smartphone’s camera. It can also function as a wireless gaming controller with sound capabilities that enhance the gaming experience.
This launch comes amid speculation about Tesla possibly entering the smartphone market, prompted by Elon Musk’s comments about potential restrictions from Apple and Google on Twitter. As Tesla faces declining market share in China, innovations like Polestar’s could set new standards in tech integration within the automotive industry.
